Isenhagen Abbey

Kloster Isenhagen, a historic Cistercian nunnery and now an evangelical women's convent, is situated in Hankensbüttel-Isenhagen in the Gifhorn district, Lower Saxony. It is distinguished by its long history and a rich collection of medieval artworks.
History+
The foundation of Kloster Isenhagen occurred in 1243 as a Cistercian monastery for monks. After a fire and the relocation of the convent, it was rebuilt in 1262 as a nunnery. Another relocation of the site took place in 1329 to Hankensbüttel, and from 1345, the third monastic building was erected at the current location of Isenhagen. During the Reformation, the monastery was transformed into an evangelical women's convent in 1540 by Duke Ernst the Confessor. The last Catholic abbess and the nuns resisted this transformation from 1529 onwards but ultimately had to submit to the sovereign's power. The monastery is dedicated to Saint Mary and John the Evangelist and continues to exist to this day.

The Gothic brick buildings house a wealth of medieval furniture and high-ranking artworks. These include carved and painted altars, sculptures, small devotional images, and embroidered altar cloths and antependia, some adorned with golden reliefs and pearls. The ribbed vault in the east cloister, added around 1500, depicts scenes from the Old and New Testaments. The chapter house is now used for lectures and chamber music events. A 2.5-acre monastery garden reflects its original design from 1750. A 400 to 500-year-old Dutch lime tree in front of the collegiate church has been recognized as a National Heritage Tree since 2023.
