The former Monastery in der Au in Bamberg, Bavaria, was once a significant center for the Carmelite Order. Its history is marked by various uses and structural changes, making it an important part of Bamberg's sacred architecture.
History+
The monastery, dedicated to Saint Lawrence, was founded at the request of King Rudolf I of Habsburg and his wife Anna von Hohenberg by Berthold von Leiningen, Bishop of Bamberg. When the convent's numbers dwindled to just a few monks in 1585, Bishop Ernst von Mengersdorf established the Seminarium Ernestinum as a seminary for priests within the monastery buildings. Four years later, in 1589, the Carmelites relocated from der Au to Kaulberg, where they occupied the former Cistercian convent of St. Maria and Theodor, remaining there until the secularization in 1803.
In 1611, the Jesuits took over the existing buildings in der Au. From 1686 onwards, they began constructing a new church in place of the old monastery church. This structure assumed the patronage and parish of the demolished St. Martin's Church in 1806 and stands today as St. Martin's Church on Grüner Markt.
