Kloster Hirschau

The monastery's founding is attributed to the dedication of parish priest Johann Baptist Kotz, who from 1845 advocated for the settlement of the Poor School Sisters in Hirschau. He acquired a property on what is now Klostergasse and financed its renovation through donations, including a significant sum from King Ludwig. Upon completion, the priest handed the building over to the community. On May 31, 1854, four sisters began their work. Due to growing demand, the premises were expanded in 1883 by demolishing a rear building and replacing it with two new halls. In 1920, the teaching staff was increased, and an additional needlework sister joined. An institutional room for toddlers was moved to Bahnhofsstraße in 1923, where a playground was also available. The National Socialist government stripped the sisters of their teaching authority on July 7, 1938, and the kindergarten was also closed in 1942. Towards the end of World War II, from February to August 1945, the monastery school served as an auxiliary hospital for up to 55 refugees, primarily from Silesia and Brandenburg, who were cared for by the sisters.

The former monastery is situated in the town of Hirschau, which belongs to the Amberg-Sulzbach district in the Upper Palatinate region of Bavaria, Germany.

Thanks to a generous donation from Klaus Conrad on his 80th birthday, the building has been given a new purpose. It now houses a facility for assisted living in eight apartments spread across two floors.
