Himmelspforte Abbey
The former Himmelspforte Monastery in Lörrach, Baden-Württemberg, was once a priory of the Premonstratensian order. The complex, situated at an elevation of approximately 310 meters above sea level, is renowned for its historical significance and its baroque-furnished monastery chapel, which served as a pilgrimage destination for centuries.
History+
The Himmelspforte Monastery was founded in 1303. In 1523, it was incorporated into the Bellelay Abbey in the Bernese Jura, and in the 18th century, it underwent a complete reconstruction. The monastery complex was dedicated to Saint Mary Himmelspforte and Saint Aegidius. As part of the secularization, the monastery was dissolved in 1806. After a period of revitalization around 1900, the complex has since served as a retirement home.
