The former Himmelkron Monastery, once a significant Cistercian abbey, is located in the Upper Franconian municipality of Himmelkron in the district of Kulmbach. The complex, which served as a monastery from the 13th to the 16th century, was later transformed into a margravial summer residence and now houses a social institution. The entire building complex is protected as both an architectural and an archaeological monument.

History+

The Himmelkron Monastery was founded in 1280. It was established as a Cistercian abbey and existed until its dissolution in 1548. Following secularization, the complex served the Bayreuth margraves as a summer residence and hunting lodge until the 19th century. The originally Gothic monastery church was redeveloped in the Baroque style during the 17th and 18th centuries. Today, it functions as the Collegiate Church of St. Mary, an Evangelical Lutheran parish church.
