Kloster Hiddensee

The foundation of Kloster Hiddensee took place in 1296 when Prince Wizlaw II of Rügen gifted the island of Hiddensee to the Cistercian monastery of Neuenkamp, with the explicit intention of establishing a daughter monastery there in honor of Saint Nicholas. To secure its economic existence, the new monastery received fishing rights, the village of Zarrenzin on the mainland, and in 1298, three salt pans from the Lüneburg saltworks. In its early years, the monastery was actively engaged in resolving existing legal claims of third parties on Hiddensee and Zingst. In 1299, the monastery took over pastoral care on the island, which was confirmed by Pope Clement V in 1310. A chapel on the southern Gellen peninsula was consecrated in 1302, and in 1306, a lighthouse agreement was concluded with Stralsund. In 1332, a new chapel was built in the north of the island, which became the parish church and today, as the Hiddensee Island Church, represents the last preserved part of the monastery. The monastery was affected by fires in 1373 and 1389, necessitating a reconsecration of the monastery church in 1410. Following the introduction of the Reformation in Pomerania, the Cistercian monastery was secularized in 1536 and converted into a ducal demesne.

The former monastery is situated on the island of Hiddensee, which belongs to the Vorpommern-Rügen region in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The island is located in the Baltic Sea off the coast of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Today, the former monastery complex is designated as an archaeological monument in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The Hiddensee Island Church, once a chapel of the monastery, is the only preserved building part and continues to serve as a parish church.
