Kloster Herrieden

The origins of Herrieden Monastery date back to 782, when Count Cadolt founded a Benedictine monastery on this site. It was gifted to Emperor Charlemagne, who had a crypt built there between 768 and 814. Until 888, it functioned as the Benedictine monastery of St. Salvator. In the same year, the Bishop of Eichstätt took over the institution and transformed it into a collegiate church, which subsequently served as a place of activity for canons. A last mention of the collegiate church dates to 1470. The establishment of the Tertiaries of St. Francis originated in 1463. It is believed that the community was dissolved in the 16th century during the Reformation. The final secularization occurred in 1806.

Herrieden Monastery is situated in the town of Herrieden, which belongs to the district of Ansbach in Bavaria, Germany.

The former monastic complex no longer exists in its original form today. The Church of Our Lady, on whose grounds the monastery once stood, still bears witness to the long history of the place.
