Kloster Helgoland

The community of the Franciscan Sisters of the Holy Family, founded in 1857, initially had its motherhouse in Eupen and later in Leuven. After their expulsion from Belgium in 1921, the sisters found a new home near Mayen. On the site of a burned-down restaurant named “Helgoland,” the foundation stone for the new monastery was laid in 1922, and it was consecrated in 1923. The monastery served as a place of prayer, contemplation, and as a conference center. A special feature was the perpetual adoration practiced in the monastery chapel since 1935. At the end of 2010, the monastery was closed due to a lack of new recruits and the advanced age of the remaining sisters. The motherhouse had already been relocated to Eupen in 1994.

Helgoland Monastery is situated in the Nettetal valley, northwest of the town of Mayen, in the Mayen-Koblenz district of Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. Its geographical setting places it in the picturesque Eifel region.

After its closure in 2010, the monastery stood empty for several years and was auctioned in 2017. In 2018, a family acquired the property to establish apartments for students and families there. The religious facilities in the outdoor area, including a listed Way of the Cross and the cemetery, are to be preserved, while the organ, altar, and pews of the chapel were given to another order.
