Helfta Abbey, officially known as St. Mary's Abbey at Helfta, is a historic Cistercian convent located in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. In the 13th century, it rose to prominence as a significant center of German women's mysticism, representing an outstanding example of the spiritual and theological development within female monastic communities of that era.

History+

The abbey was founded in 1229 by Count Burchard of Mansfeld and his wife Elisabeth of Schwarzburg, near Mansfeld Castle. Initially established as a proprietary monastery for the Counts of Mansfeld, it was settled by seven nuns from St. James' Abbey in Halberstadt. Following the Count's death, his widow relocated the convent to Rossdorf in 1234. Due to a severe water shortage, the nuns eventually moved to Helfta in 1258. Under the leadership of Abbess Gertrud of Hackeborn, the abbey flourished into an important mystical center, shaped by figures such as Mechthild of Magdeburg, Gertrud of Helfta, and Mechthild of Hackeborn. The abbey was secularized in 1545/1546 and subsequently used for various purposes over the centuries, including as a Prussian domain and a state-owned farm during the GDR era, leading to its decline. After the political changes, it underwent revitalization and was re-opened in 1999.
