Kloster Heilig Kreuz

The Holy Cross Monastery was founded at the end of the 12th century by Margrave Dietrich the Oppressed of Meißen. Originally endowed for Benedictine nuns, the first buildings were located on the site of a former moated castle between the castle hill and the Elbe. In 1217, the monastery was relocated to its current site, approximately 1.5 kilometers north of Meißen's old town on the left bank of the Elbe. A church building was erected in the first half of the 13th century. For a short period, the Benedictine monastery was subordinate to the Cistercian monastery of Altzella, but returned to the Benedictine rule in the mid-13th century. The monastery received donations, including the village of Sommerfeld near Leipzig in 1220, which was later sold, as well as the church of Luppa. After the Reformation, the monastery was dissolved in 1568. Around 1570/71, its property was transferred to the St. Afra State School, while the monastery buildings were left to decay and destroyed during the Seven Years' War. In 1900, 23 people lived in the independent estate district of Klostergut. From 1945, the monastery grounds served as a nursery. Since 1994, it has been the seat of the Meißner Hahnemannzentrum e. V., which has undertaken preservation and restoration work on the buildings. Archaeological excavations took place between 1997 and 2001, and again in 2004.

The Holy Cross Monastery ruin is located in Meißen, a town in Saxony, Germany, directly on the left bank of the Elbe River. It is situated approximately 1.5 kilometers north of Meißen's historic old town.

Today, the grounds of the former Holy Cross Monastery are home to the Meißner Hahnemannzentrum e. V., which is dedicated to the preservation and safeguarding of the historic building fabric. Archaeological investigations continue to explore the history of the site.
