Kloster Grevenbroich

The monastery was founded in 1297 by Count Walram von Kessel and his wife Katharina. They provided brothers of the Wilhelmine Order from the Paradies Monastery with a farmstead and a chapel dedicated to Saints George and Katharina. The special veneration of Saint Katharina was reflected in the monastery's designation as Katharinenkloster. Two years later, in 1299, the Archbishop of Cologne, Wigbold, confirmed the donation and consecrated the chapel. Over the following centuries, the monastery developed into the most important Wilhelmine settlement north of the Alps. The Counts of Jülich, who succeeded the Kessel family from 1305, also supported the monastery through numerous donations. In 1329, an altar donated by them in honor of John the Evangelist was consecrated, and a newly built chapel next to the monastery church was mentioned. In 1574, Duke Wilhelm urged the prior to demolish the dilapidated buildings and rebuild them from scratch. A year later, he transferred all the possessions of the dissolved Königshoven Monastery to the convent. Economic difficulties eventually led to the monastery joining the Cistercian Order under the abbot of Kamp Monastery in 1628. The two-aisled monastery church, late Gothic in its core, underwent a renovation in 1728, during which the aisles received Baroque barrel vaults. After the secularization in 1802, the monastery was converted into a cotton spinning mill. In 1823, the Roman Catholic parish acquired the former monastery church, as the old parish church had become dilapidated. The restored monastery church served as a parish church until the end of the 19th century but was then replaced by a new building, into which the late Gothic choir from the 15th century was integrated as a side aisle.

Grevenbroich Monastery is located in the town of Grevenbroich in the Rhein-Kreis Neuss, a region in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

The former monastery buildings now house the Katholische Bildungsstätte Bernardusheim. The Bernardusturm, originally part of the medieval town fortifications, is also preserved.
