Graukloster Abbey

The Monastery of St. Paul was founded in 1234. It was inhabited by brothers of the Franciscan Order and grew to become one of the largest Franciscan monasteries in what was then Danish territory. Throughout its history, it hosted several provincial chapters. In the course of the Reformation, the monastery was dissolved between 1528 and 1529. The convent buildings were subsequently converted into an almshouse, while the original monastery church served as a town hall after secularization and was later replaced by a new building.

The former monastery is situated in the city of Schleswig in the Schleswig-Flensburg district, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. The complex is located at an elevation of approximately 16 meters above sea level.

Parts of the medieval monastic buildings are still preserved today. These have been used by the city administration since the 1980s. The current complex, consisting of the town hall and the former cloister, provides an impression of the original dimensions.
