Kloster Gräfinthal

The monastery's origins trace back to the mid-13th century, when Countess Elisabeth of Blieskastel initiated its foundation. The Countess, whose death is recorded in 1273, was likely buried in Gräfinthal; a medieval tomb in the monastery church might be her grave. According to legend, she founded the monastery out of gratitude for the healing of an eye ailment she experienced after praying before a miraculous image. This image, the "Madonna with Arrows," later became the central sanctuary of the monastery church. Wilhelmites monks, hermits of the Order of William of Malavalle, settled the complex and managed the pilgrimage. Gräfinthal was one of the few Wilhelmites monasteries in Germany and, at its dissolution, the last one existing in the imperial territory. In the 18th century, the monastery experienced a flourishing period with extensive construction, supported by Stanislaus Lesczynski, the exiled King of Poland. He had his daughter Anna, who died in 1717, buried in the monastery church and commissioned Jonas Erikson Sundahl to rebuild the convent buildings and the monastery church. The king's second daughter, Maria Leszczyńska, later Queen of France, also visited the pilgrimage site. The Wilhelmites convent was dissolved in 1785 and transformed into a secular collegiate church, with the "Madonna with Arrows" transferred to Blieskastel. The monastery complex subsequently fell into increasing disrepair. Significant parts of the Baroque interior, including the pulpit and confessionals by Johann Martersteck, are now located in the Catholic Church of St. Markus in Reinheim, while the former high altar is in St. Paul in Bliesmengen-Bolchen. In 1803, Jean-Baptist Mathieu acquired the ruins and had the choir of the monastery church converted into a chapel in 1809. Since 1901, the chapel property has been owned by the parish of Bliesmengen-Bolchen.

Gräfinthal Monastery is located in Saarland, nestled within the municipality of Mandelbachtal.

Today, Gräfinthal Monastery is an Olivetan convent and a regional Marian pilgrimage site. The complex is protected as a historical monument.
