Abbey

The Gottesberg Monastery, once a significant religious center, is located in Ravensburg, Baden-Württemberg. It is known for its historical development and the veneration of the Holy Cross.

History+

The origins of Gottesberg Monastery date back to 1704, when an endowment was made for the church on Gottesberg. In 1709, a Holy Sepulchre Chapel, a staircase, and a hermitage were built. The patronage of the complex was the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. A brotherhood of the good death, founded in 1712, was dedicated to the agony of Christ. From 1763, three brothers of the Tertiaries, a community of the 3rd Order of Penitents and a branch of the Paulaner, settled on Gottesberg. These brothers committed not to collect donations and not to acquire real estate. They earned their livelihood through crafts such as wool spinning and weaving. In 1767, they managed to acquire the Holy Bodies of Redemptus, Eutropia, and Reparatus, as well as a Holy Blood relic, which are still preserved in the monastery church today. The monastery was dissolved on July 25, 1806, during the secularization by Prince Eberhard von Waldburg-Zeil-Wurzach. In 1921, the Order of the Salvatorians was called to Gottesberg and established a new monastery there. Since 1928, the Holy Blood Festival with a mounted procession has been celebrated annually.
