Kloster Goldbach

The foundation of Goldbach Monastery took place around 1380 by Anna von Leuchtenberg, the widow of Kraft III von Hohenlohe. As early as 1382, Bishop Gerhard von Schwarzburg of Würzburg confirmed the foundation and transferred the patronage of the parish of Untermünkheim to the convent, which ensured regular income for the monastery but also entailed the obligation to maintain a vicar. The monastery was designed for a prior, four monks, and five lay brothers, with the Counts of Hohenlohe exercising the Vogtship. It was initially subordinate to Argenhardt Monastery and later to the Pauliner Provincial in Langnau. Papal protection, including by Urban VI and Martin V, as well as numerous donations and property purchases, which included the patronage rights of Ilsfeld and Satteldorf, contributed to the steady growth of the monastery's possessions. A detailed inventory from 1511 provides insight into the equipment at the time, including the library. With the Reformation and the introduction of a Protestant church order in Hohenlohe in 1553, the monastery's existence came to an end. Income from the parishes in the territory of the imperial city of Schwäbisch Hall ceased, and the monastery's property was confiscated by the Counts of Hohenlohe and divided. Goldbach itself passed to the Waldenburg line, which sold it to private individuals in 1772.

Of the former monastery complex, which was surrounded by a wall and included a chapel dedicated to Saint Lawrence, a brotherhood house, the Endreßhaus, and a stable, today only the footprint of the brotherhood house, remnants of the surrounding wall, and the monastery lake remain.
