Gerode Abbey

The foundation of Kloster Gerode took place around 1110. It was initially endowed by Count Widelo and his son Rüdiger, who provided extensive lands that ensured the monastery's early prosperity. After the founders' deaths, construction was continued by Richardis, the widow of Margrave Rudolf von Stade, and her sons. In 1124, Richardis handed over the monastery to Archbishop Adalbert of Mainz, placing it under the archdiocese's authority. In the late Middle Ages, the monastery suffered from wars, feuds, and the plague. In 1467, the abbey joined the Bursfelde Reform Congregation. The Peasants' War in 1525 and the Thirty Years' War, which raged from 1622, caused significant damage. The dissolution of the monastery, known as secularization, finally occurred in 1803 by the Kingdom of Prussia. The monastic buildings were subsequently converted into a state domain.

Kloster Gerode is situated in the northeast of the Eichsfeld region in Thuringia, approximately one kilometer south of Weißenborn-Lüderode. It lies in a valley below the Winkelberg at an elevation of about 259 meters above sea level.

Following its secularization in 1803, the former monastery buildings were used as a state domain. At that time, the estate included extensive arable land, meadows, gardens, and forests. Today, the complex no longer functions as a monastery but serves as a center for conferences and recreation.
