Kloster Engelthal

Kloster Engelthal

Kloster Engelthal, a former Cistercian nunnery, is located in Ober-Ingelheim, a district of Ingelheim am Rhein in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The complex, extending from Ohrenbrücker Tor to Stiegelgässer Tor, is a significant cultural monument in Germany and bears witness to a rich history.

History+

The founding of Kloster Engelthal in 1285 was an indirect consequence of the political struggles between emperor and pope in the 13th century, which led to the decline of the Ingelheim Imperial Palace and thus Nieder-Ingelheim. Ober-Ingelheim gained importance during this period as noble families, once part of the Imperial Palace administration, settled there. The monastery was first documented in 1290 and received the necessary economic foundations in 1319 through the will of Mainz Archbishop Peter von Aspelt. Spiritual oversight was provided by the Cistercian Abbey of Eberbach. Through numerous donations from surrounding ministerial families, Engelthal quickly developed into an important landed estate. With the Reformation, introduced in the region from 1556, and the destruction of the buildings during the Thirty Years' War, monastic life ceased. The lands were subsequently leased out.
