Kloster Eisbergen

The monastery was founded on December 8, 1980, in Cologne by Bishop Germain of St. Denis, who at that time served as bishop for the Western Rite communities in Central Europe under the Romanian Orthodox Patriarchate. When the Romanian Orthodox Patriarchate restricted Bishop Germain's jurisdiction to France in 1984, the convent lost its canonical status within the Orthodox Church. Following unsuccessful efforts to find a new jurisdiction and negotiations with the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and the Archdiocese of Paderborn, the monastery was admitted to the Western Rite Vicariate of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia in February 2013. Since then, it has been under the supervision of the First Hierarch of the Russian Church Abroad, Metropolitan Hilarion.

Kloster Eisbergen is located in the Minden-Lübbecke region of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, specifically in the Eisbergen district of the city of Porta Westfalica.

The convent was originally located in Cologne from 1980 to 2009. In September 2009, it relocated to a complex in Porta Westfalica-Eisbergen, which was established by acquiring a former uniform factory and offers approximately 640 m² of interior space. The monastery church was consecrated on September 2, 2012. The monastery is led by Abbot Thomas Komossa, with Father M. Philipp Langer serving as Prior. The liturgy, according to its own statements, is celebrated in the form issued by Pope Pius V based on the ancient tradition of the Roman Church, though with notable rubrical and textual variations, particularly the absence of the Filioque in the Creed and the replacement of "Papa" with "Patriarcha" in the Canon. Lay people can join the monastery as oblates, living according to the spirit of the Rule of Saint Benedict without abandoning their secular professions.
