Ebrach Abbey

Ebrach Abbey was founded in 1127 by the Franconian noblemen Berno and Richwin in the wooded valley of the Middle Ebrach. It was established as a daughter monastery under the French mother abbey of Morimond. The founding convent consisted of twelve monks led by Abbot Adam. The monastery experienced an initial period of prosperity under Abbot Adam, a confidant of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, during which six daughter monasteries were founded, including Rein Abbey and Heilsbronn Abbey. The current abbey church, whose foundation stone was laid in 1200, was consecrated in 1285. Through extensive donations from the Franconian nobility, the monastery achieved great wealth. Throughout its history, Ebrach was repeatedly affected by wars and fires, such as during the Peasants' War in 1525 and the Thirty Years' War. After the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, a period of recovery began, followed by extensive construction activity from 1658 onwards. In the 18th century, the monastery experienced another flourishing period, during which the palace-like Baroque buildings and gardens were created. The dissolution of the monastery occurred during the secularization in 1803.

The former Ebrach Abbey is situated in the municipality of Ebrach within the Archdiocese of Bamberg, Bavaria, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 331 meters above sea level.

The former monastery buildings and the abbey church are preserved today and shape the townscape. Parts of the ancillary buildings are now used for gastronomy and house a butcher shop and a forestry office.
