Corvey Abbey

The monastery of Corvey was founded in 815. Established as Nova Corbeia, a new foundation of the Corbie Monastery in France, it developed into a cultural, spiritual, and economic center in Saxony during the 9th and 10th centuries. After a period of crisis in the 11th century, Corvey became a reform monastery. Later, it established itself as a princely abbey with its own territory but lost influence in the late Middle Ages. The Thirty Years' War led to considerable destruction, but from the late 17th century onwards, a Baroque reconstruction of the church and monastery buildings took place. In 1792, the monastery was converted into a prince-bishopric before being secularized in 1803. The monastery's patron saints were Martin, Peter, Stephen, Vitus, Justinus, and Mercurius.

Corvey Monastery is located within the municipality of Höxter in North Rhine-Westphalia, directly on the western bank of the Weser river. The complex lies at an elevation of approximately 92 meters above sea level in a wide and fertile Weser valley, which forms the current state border between North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony.

The impressive Carolingian Westwork with its 9th-century frescoes is of particular architectural-historical significance. The former abbey church now stands as a monument to Baroque decorative art. The grave of August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben is located in the adjacent cemetery. Inside the present-day castle, visitors can explore the Imperial Hall, the ducal salons, and the Princely Library with approximately 74,000 volumes.
