Kloster Breitenbich

The monastery was likely founded around 1230, with an endowment charter from 1250 suggesting an already existing convent. Its economic foundation was based on properties donated by the heirs of Dietrich von Helmsdorf. Situated in a region marked by conflicts between Eichsfeld interests and the imperial city of Mühlhausen, the monastery suffered early on from looting. During the Thuringian-Hessian War of Succession (1247–1263), the monastic buildings were so severely damaged that a regular monastic life was no longer possible. The nuns subsequently found refuge in Mühlhausen and later founded Anrode Monastery. A commandery of the Order of Saint Lazarus was established at this site in 1253.

The former monastery was located in the present-day hamlet of Breitenbich, a district of Zella, which belongs to the town of Dingelstädt in the Eichsfeld district of Thuringia. Ecclesiastically, it was part of the Archdiocese of Mainz. The remains of the monastic church and convent buildings are presumed to be about 300 meters southwest of the current settlement of Breitenbich, where foundation remnants were discovered in the 19th century.

Today, only archaeological traces remain of the former Breitenbich Monastery, indicating the brief existence of this early Cistercian nunnery. There is no longer any active use as a sacred building or convent.
