Bornhofen Abbey

The church's origins date back to around 1400, when Knight Johannes Brömser von Rüdesheim began construction on the remains of an earlier building. The church was completed in 1435 under his son Johann. Over time, a miraculous image of Mary attracted an increasing number of pilgrims. Due to the large influx, the Archbishop of Trier, Johann Hugo von Orsbeck, called upon the Capuchins to establish a monastery. The foundation stone for the monastic complex was laid in 1680, and construction was completed in 1684. Kloster Bornhofen was founded in 1679 and secularized in 1813. Following the dissolution of the monastery and the threat of the church's destruction, the local population acquired the building in 1820 to ensure its preservation. The pilgrimage revived, and from 1850, the Redemptorists took charge of the monastery, leading to a flourishing of the pilgrimage. During the May Laws of 1873, the religious order had to leave the monastery, but the pilgrimage continued to be supported by the local community.

The monastery is located in Kamp-Bornhofen in the Rhein-Lahn district, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 71 meters above sea level. It lies beneath the castles of Sterrenberg and Liebenstein, about 20 kilometers south of Koblenz.

Kloster Bornhofen is currently an active Franciscan monastery and serves as a Marian pilgrimage church. It is a protected cultural property under the Hague Convention and a central point for pilgrims and visitors within the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley.
