Bordesholmer Kloster

The monastery's origins trace back to a canons' foundation established by Vizelin in Wippenthorp (now Neumünster) in 1127. Following a fire in 1264 and challenging economic conditions, the convent was granted permission to relocate in 1290. A donation of the Eiderstede area on Bordesholm Lake facilitated the new construction. The canons built causeways on an island at the lake's edge to secure the land, where they erected the monastic buildings. The relocation was completed in 1332 with the transfer of Vizelin's relics and the consecration of the choir and high altar. The monastery operated a hospital and expanded its influence by incorporating several parish churches, including St. Nikolai in Kiel and the churches of Brügge and Flintbek. Thanks to numerous endowments and pilgrimages, the monastery church underwent several expansions in the 15th century.

Bordesholm Monastery is situated in the municipality of Bordesholm in the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 37 meters above sea level.

Today, the complex is protected as a cultural monument in Schleswig-Holstein, bearing witness to the rich history of the Augustinian Canons Regular foundation.
