Evangelische Kirche Blankenheim

The monastery was founded in 1190 by Abbot Siegfried of Hersfeld Monastery in the Geisbach valley in Aua. It was placed under the patronage of Mary and the Apostle John. Donations, such as the confirmation of churches and chapels in Sipperhausen, Dagobertshausen, Obergeis, and Mühlbach by Archbishop Konrad I of Mainz in 1195, secured its initial endowment. In 1197, the monastery acquired further properties in Giesenrod. Due to the unfavorable location in the narrow Geisbach valley, the monastery was relocated in 1229 by Abbot Ludwig I to Blankenheim on the Fulda. A year earlier, Archbishop Siegfried II of Mainz had permitted the exchange of the churches in Sipperhausen and Dagobertshausen for the church in Braach. Although the monastery in Blankenheim never achieved great wealth, it received further donations, including properties from the Heerse women's collegiate foundation in 1233 and possessions in Hergershausen in 1247. The introduction of the Reformation and the subsequent secularization of monasteries in the Landgraviate of Hesse in 1527 marked the end of its monastic use. The facilities were subsequently converted into a landgravial vogtei and later into a domain.

Kloster Blankenheim is located in Blankenheim, a district of Bebra, in the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district in Hesse, Germany. The complex is situated on a hill west of the Fulda floodplains.

The former monastery church in Blankenheim, built in the 13th century, is now only partially preserved. It serves as the Protestant village church, with only the choir and transept remaining. The former monastery church in Aua, a late Romanesque building with a 12th-century baptismal font, is also used as a Protestant church.
