Bergen auf Rügen Abbey

The Bergen auf Rügen Monastery, a former Cistercian priory, shaped the history of Rügen Island for centuries. It is located in Vorpommern-Rügen, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 71 meters above sea level. The complex is now protected as a historical monument and bears witness to the early Christianization and ecclesiastical development of the region.
History+
The founding of Bergen Monastery dates back to Prince Jaromar I of Rügen, who established it in 1193. Prior to this, he had a church built from fired bricks and consecrated by Bishop Peter of Roskilde. Construction of St. Mary's Church had already begun between 1170 and 1180. Initially, twelve Benedictine nuns from Roskilde moved in, making Bergen the first nunnery in the Principality of Rügen. Although the exact date of its transition to the Cistercian Order is not documented, Pope Innocent IV confirmed the validity of the Cistercian rule for the monastery in 1250. Throughout its history, the monastery acquired extensive lands and rights, including patronage over several churches and high jurisdiction. A fire in 1445 destroyed large parts of the complex and the church, which was subsequently rebuilt on its remaining walls and re-consecrated. After the Reformation, the monastery was transformed into an evangelical noble ladies' foundation in the 16th century and continued in this form until 1945.
