Bachkovo Monastery is a significant sacred building in Bulgaria and the second-largest monastery in the country. It is picturesquely situated on the northern edge of the Rhodope Mountains, south of Plovdiv and near Asenovgrad. As an important pilgrimage center and national sanctuary, it attracts numerous visitors.

The monastery was founded in 1083 by the Byzantine commander Gregory Pakourianos and his brother Abas. Originally inhabited by Georgian monks, control changed in the 13th century, but Georgian cultural influences persisted until the 14th century. During the Second Bulgarian Empire, it developed into a central spiritual hub and was renowned for its scriptorium. Even during Ottoman rule, the monastery played a crucial role in preserving Bulgarian culture and language.
