Saints Peter and Paul Church

The Badersleben Monastery was founded in 1479 when the Augustinian canonesses of the destroyed Marienthal Monastery from Eldagsen acquired the Badersleben monastery court, including a water mill, from the Huysburg Monastery. They dedicated their new monastery to Saint Augustine, their order's founder, naming it Marienbeck or Marienspring. The foundation charter of 1479 granted the monastery's provost extensive parochial rights over the inhabitants of the Badersleben collegiate freedom, thus exempting him from the local parish. This arrangement received papal confirmation in 1503. Despite the Reformation in the area around Magdeburg and Halberstadt, Badersleben Monastery was able to persist as one of seventeen Catholic monasteries in the now Protestant region, thanks to the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. From 1650, it was under the jurisdiction of the Cologne Nuncio and later the Apostolic Vicariate of the North. During the secularization period of the French era, the monastery was dissolved in 1810 by a decree from Jérôme Bonaparte. The monastery church was handed over to the Catholic parish, while the remaining property was sold and later housed an agricultural school, which operated until 1939.

The former Badersleben Monastery is located in Badersleben, a district of the unified municipality of Huy, in the Harz district of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. The region is characterized by its proximity to the Harz mountains.

The former monastery church of St. Peter and Paul now serves as the Catholic parish church for the St. Benedikt parish. Since 1991, the Albert Klaus municipal primary school has been housed in the former monastery buildings, and since 2010, a residential facility for adults with intellectual disabilities, belonging to the Internationaler Bund, has been located there.
