Arnsburg Abbey (Lich)

The origins of the monastery grounds date back to Roman times, when a cohort fort was built around 90 AD. After its decline, two castles emerged in the Middle Ages, the second of which is dated to around the year 1000. In 1150, Konrad II and Luitgart founded a Benedictine monastery on the site, but it was dissolved as early as 1174. Shortly thereafter, even before 1151, Kloster Arnsburg was re-established as a Cistercian abbey and dedicated to Saint Mary. The monks used material from the abandoned Arnsburg Castle for the construction of their church. The abbey existed until its dissolution during the secularization in 1802.

Kloster Arnsburg is situated in the northern part of the Wetterau, in the lowlands of the Wetter River. It is a district of Lich in Hesse, Germany, and is located at an elevation of approximately 164 meters above sea level.

After the dissolution of the monastery, the estates passed to the Counts of Solms-Laubach. Parts of the Baroque monastery buildings are still used as a castle today. The late Romanesque and early Gothic sections of the church are preserved as ruins. A war cemetery has been located in the former cloister since 1960.
