Kloster Altmühlmünster

Altmühlmünster Monastery, once a significant monastic settlement, is picturesquely situated in the Bavarian landscape near Kelheim. Of the original complex, only the church remains today, serving as the parish church of St. John the Baptist and bearing witness to a turbulent history.

History+

The first written mention of the locality Altmühlmünster dates back to 1154. A year later, in 1155, the burgraves Heinrich and Otto of Riedenburg founded a monastery, which they transferred to the Knights Templar in 1158. This Templar commandery was staffed by a commander and five brothers and possessed extensive land, farms, water rights, hunting rights, and vineyards. Following the Europe-wide dissolution of the Templar Order in 1312, Altmühlmünster Monastery was transferred to the Order of St. John by Emperor Louis the Bavarian. Over centuries, Altmühlmünster developed into one of the most important Johanniter commanderies in the region. In the early 16th century, the St. Leonhard commandery in Regensburg was incorporated. The final dissolution of the monastery occurred in 1810 as part of the secularization.

Location+

The former monastery is located in Altmühlmünster, a district of Kelheim in the Kelheim district, Bavaria, Germany. It is situated at an elevation of approximately 406 meters above sea level.

On site+

The only visible remnant of the former monastic complex is the current parish church of St. John the Baptist. This church still preserves Romanesque core elements of the original monastic church, which was expanded in the 15th century under the aegis of the Johanniters with a polygonal choir and side chapels.
