Alpirsbach Abbey

The foundation of Alpirsbach Abbey occurred in 1095, when monks from St. Blasien settled the area. This was based on a former estate, endowed by Counts Alwik von Sulz, Adalbert von Zollern, and the noble free lord Ruodman von Hausen. The consecration by Bishop Gebhard III of Constance on January 16, 1095, marked its official beginning. A stone oratory was consecrated as early as 1099, and in 1101, Pope Paschal II placed the complex under papal protection. The large monastery church was consecrated in 1128. In the 14th century, the monastery experienced a period of prosperity under Abbots Walter and Brun von Schenkenberg, despite declining revenues. In the 15th century, a dispute between reformers and anti-reformers led to the dissolution of the convent by 1455. Later, the abbey joined the Melk Reform in 1471 and became affiliated with the Bursfelde Congregation in 1482, leading to renewed economic prosperity and extensive construction projects. The Reformation in the 16th century brought turbulent times. Following the introduction of the Reformation by Duke Ulrich of Württemberg, the monastery was dissolved in 1535. Between 1548 and 1555, the Benedictine monks temporarily returned, but the Peace of Augsburg in 1555 led to its final transfer to the Protestants.

Alpirsbach Abbey is located in the town of Freudenstadt in the federal state of Baden-Württemberg, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 459 meters above sea level.

The former Benedictine abbey of Alpirsbach today is a site that preserves the Romanesque architecture of the monastery church and its Gothic cloister. The epitaphs of Abbots Walter and Brun von Schenkenberg from the 14th century are still preserved.
