Adelberg Abbey
Adelberg Monastery, a former Premonstratensian foundation, is located in Adelberg near Göppingen in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It is distinguished by its historical significance and the preserved complex, which still conveys a sense of its original scale.
History+
The foundation of Adelberg Monastery took place in 1178. It was established as a Premonstratensian abbey and dedicated to Saints Mary and Ulrich. In its early phase, the monastery received strong support from the Staufer dynasty, who also held the Vogtship. For over three centuries, a convent of canons and a convent of canonesses coexisted here, until the canonesses relocated to Lauffen am Neckar in 1476. From 1372, the monastery came under the rule of Württemberg, which led to an economic flourishing in the 15th century, making Adelberg one of the wealthiest foundations in the duchy at that time. During the German Peasants' War, the complex suffered severe damage. With the Reformation, the monastery was dissolved in 1535. From 1565 to 1629/1630, it served as an evangelical monastic school, whose most famous pupil was Johannes Kepler. Until 1810, it was the seat of a prelacy of the Württemberg regional church.
Location+
Adelberg Monastery is situated at an elevation of approximately 444 meters above sea level. It lies on a clearing island in the eastern Schurwald forest, nestled between the Rems valley to the north and the Fils valley to the south, not far from Göppingen in Baden-Württemberg.

Although the monastery church was demolished after the Reformation, parts of the complex, including its surrounding wall, are still well preserved. Of artistic significance is the Ulrichskapelle (Ulrich's Chapel) with its altar from the workshop of Nikolaus Weckmann and the associated panel paintings by Bartholomäus Zeitblom.
