Abensberg Abbey

Kloster Abensberg is a former Carmelite monastery in Abensberg, a town in Bavaria, Germany. It is known for its long history and architectural evolution, spanning from Gothic to Baroque styles.
History+
The monastery of Abensberg was founded in 1389 by Count Johannes II of Abensberg and his wife Agnes von Lichtenstein. It was entrusted to the Carmelites and dedicated to Mary. Following papal and episcopal approval, the donation was officially completed in 1392. During the Thirty Years' War, the monastery suffered severe damage, leading to extensive reconstruction in 1686. The secularization in 1802 ended its monastic use, its assets were confiscated, and the monks were expelled. The former monastery church temporarily served as a prisoner-of-war camp and warehouse before being used again for religious services from 1817. In 1839, the church became the property of the city of Abensberg and was transferred to the parish of St. Barbara in 1939. After destruction in World War II, the church was gradually renovated, with the work largely completed by 1989.
Location+
The former Kloster Abensberg is situated in the town of Abensberg, which belongs to the district of Kelheim in Bavaria, Germany. It is located at an altitude of approximately 378 meters above sea level.

Another part of the building complex, which served as a printing house until 2004, now houses the Office for Food, Agriculture and Forestry after renovation. Storks can be observed nesting on the monastery roof annually. The former monastery church continues to be used for religious services.
