Klarissenkloster Paderborn

The monastery's origins trace back to 1921, when plans for a new foundation in Paderborn emerged from the Poor Clares' Monastery in Münster. The foundation stone for the complex was laid in 1925, and a small chapel was consecrated in 1926. Seven cloistered sisters and three external sisters then began their communal life. During the Nazi era, the monastery remained unconfiscated, but the sisters were required to perform home labor for the Wehrmacht. After World War II, which the monastery survived with minor damage, Franciscans and Cellitine sisters, whose own monasteries had been destroyed, found refuge here. In the post-war period, a soup kitchen was established for the local population. The current monastery church and the sisters' choir were built in 1949. Further construction phases followed in 1951 with the addition of the south wing and the redesign of the gate area, and in 1968 with the roofing of the cloister. The community was a founding member of the Federation of German-speaking Poor Clares, established in 1963. In 1985, the church and sisters' choir were renovated. The Paderborn Poor Clares also founded a monastery in Brno, consecrated in 1997. In 1998, the last two external sisters moved into the cloister, and the external sisters' wing became a residential area for students of the former Clemens-Hofbauer-Kolleg. After a renovation of the novitiate wing in 2000, the sisters celebrated their 85th anniversary in Paderborn in 2011. In 2014, the Poor Clares left the monastery, which had become too large for their needs, and moved to Salzkotten to continue their monastic life there.

The former Poor Clares' Monastery is located in the city of Paderborn in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

After the Poor Clares moved out, the property was used by the Archdiocese of Paderborn as accommodation for refugees in October 2015. Since February 2016, a weekly church service has been held in the church of the former monastery.
