Klarissenkloster Düsseldorf

The monastery was founded in 1871 by Franciscan Paschalis Gratze to house Poor Clares of the reformed Colettine branch, who had already settled in Düsseldorf in 1859. This new foundation played a significant role in the re-establishment of the Poor Clare Order in Germany after secularization. During the Kulturkampf in Prussia, the Düsseldorf Poor Clares had to temporarily relocate to the Netherlands. From this location, further monasteries were later founded in Bocholt, Cologne-Kalk, and Bad Neuenahr. In early 2000, the last Poor Clare sisters left the monastery due to old age. In 2004, Cistercian nuns from Denmark moved into the building, a settlement that was dissolved in 2013 after internal difficulties. The remaining sisters then founded a new, non-papally recognized community, known as the Claraval Sisters.

The monastery is situated in the city of Düsseldorf in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is located at an elevation of approximately 43 meters above sea level.

The building of the former Poor Clare monastery is now protected as a listed building in North Rhine-Westphalia. It is currently inhabited by a community of sisters who lead a contemplative life and produce various handcrafted items.
