St. Paul's Church, Munich
St. Paul's Church in Munich, an imposing cathedral in the heart of the city, represents an outstanding example of Neo-Gothic architecture. It significantly shapes the urban landscape of the Bavarian capital and is an important listed building within the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising.
History+
The foundation stone for St. Paul's was laid in 1892, after the building plot had been provided by the city of Munich as early as 1883. The construction, designed by Georg von Hauberrisser in the Neo-Gothic style, was a response to Munich's strong population growth and the associated need for new parish churches. A specially founded church building association oversaw the project, which was completed in 1906 with a solemn inauguration. During World War II, the building suffered severe damage, particularly from air raids in 1944. After the war, reconstruction and a contemporary modernization of the interior took place.
