Seville Cathedral (Catedral de Santa María de la Sede)
The Cathedral of Seville, officially known as Catedral de Santa María de la Sede, is an outstanding example of Gothic architecture and the episcopal church of the Archdiocese of Seville. It is considered the largest Gothic church in the world and impresses with its enormous dimensions and rich history, deeply rooted in the city's Moorish past.
History+
Construction of the cathedral began in 1401 and was completed in 1519. It was built on the remains of the former 12th-century Arab main mosque. Since 1928, the imposing house of worship has been a protected monument and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. Inside, the cathedral houses the tomb of Christopher Columbus, erected in 1902, as well as numerous chapels, including the Capilla de San Antonio with a work by Murillo and the Capilla Real, which serves as a burial place for Ferdinand III and his family. Particularly noteworthy is the Retablo in the Capilla Mayor, considered the largest altarpiece in the world. The bell tower, known as the Giralda, was originally the minaret of the Moorish mosque and was built in the 12th century. Today it is a landmark of Seville and can be ascended via a ramp.
