Reims Cathedral

The church can be visited

The Cathedral of Notre-Dame in Reims is an outstanding example of Gothic architecture in France. As the coronation site of numerous French kings, it holds a special place in the country's history and attracts many visitors annually.

History+

Construction of the current cathedral began in 1211, after a devastating fire in the previous year destroyed the earlier building. The three-aisled basilica, with the exception of the west facade, was completed in the 14th century, with the nave extended to accommodate the many people attending royal coronations. A fire in 1481 destroyed the roof and towers. The cathedral suffered severe damage during World War I, particularly to the wooden roof structure, which was completely destroyed. After extensive renovations, which spanned over two decades and were financially supported by the Rockefeller family, the re-consecration took place in 1937. The cathedral is also an important symbol of Franco-German reconciliation, underscored by meetings of high-ranking politicians such as Charles de Gaulle and Konrad Adenauer (1962), and François Hollande and Angela Merkel (2012).
