The Cathedral of Angoulême, an impressive sacred building in the French region of Poitou-Charentes, is an outstanding example of late Romanesque architecture. Particularly striking is its richly decorated west facade, depicting scenes of the Last Judgment and considered a significant work of Romanesque sculpture in Western France.
History+
The construction of St. Peter's Cathedral in Angoulême began in 1105 and was completed as early as 1128. Unusually for the time, construction started with the facade. In the 19th century, the building underwent extensive restoration by Paul Abadie, whose interventions, particularly on the facade and interior, were critically viewed by contemporary art historians. The cathedral has been classified as a Monument historique since 1840 and serves as the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Angoulême.
