Cathédrale Saint-Pierre de Poitiers

The construction of the Cathedral of Saint-Pierre began in 1166 and continued until 1271, with the towers only being completed in the 15th century. At the time of the laying of the foundation stone, Eleanor of Aquitaine, who resided in her castle in Poitiers and developed it into a center of courtly life, had already been Queen of England for over a decade and gave birth to her tenth child, John Lackland, that year. The Diocese of Poitiers then comprised about 1200 parishes. The cathedral's architecture clearly shows the evolution from Romanesque to High Gothic stylistic elements, starting with the choir and progressing through the transept and nave to the west facade. The 13th-century westwork was influenced by the Gothic cathedrals of the Île-de-France, such as Notre-Dame de Paris, which is reflected in the three portal systems with tympanum. The jamb statues were lost during the French Revolution, but the magnificent rose window remained. Inside, the cathedral is a pseudo-basilical hall church, a type of building typical of Poitou, characterized by naves of equal height without a clerestory. A special detail is a wall labyrinth in the third bay of the central nave. The cathedral also houses remarkable stained-glass windows from the 12th and 13th centuries, including the apse window, considered one of the oldest surviving stained-glass windows in France, depicting the crucifixion scene and Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine. The organ, a work by François-Henri Clicquot from 1787, is one of the most beautiful in France. The choir stalls, presumably a gift from Bishop Jean de Melun, are among the oldest preserved in France and display a variety of religious and secular motifs. After the Revolution, the destroyed furnishings were replaced by pieces from surrounding monasteries. The cathedral treasury is presented in the south facade tower.

The cathedral is open to visitors today and can be explored. It continues to serve as an episcopal seat and is an active place of worship.
