Cathédrale Saint-Étienne de Toul

The origins of the cathedral date back to the 4th century, when an initial church building was erected outside the then-city. After a fire in the early 9th century, Bishop Frothar had the church rebuilt. In the 10th century, under Bishop Gerhard I, a Romanesque new construction began. The current Gothic cathedral started in 1221 under Bishop Eudes II de Sorcy on the foundations of the previous building, beginning with the choir. The construction of the nave extended into the 15th century, interrupted by conflicts between Burgundy and Lorraine. The completion of the west facade, designed by Tristan von Hattonchatel, only occurred in 1496. Despite the long construction period spanning several centuries, the building exhibits remarkable stylistic unity. The first restorations began in the 19th century. During World War II, the cathedral suffered severe damage from bomb-induced fires, with the entire roof being destroyed. An extensive restoration, spanning decades, secured the preservation of the edifice, which is the only cathedral in France owned by a municipality.
