Kloster Sankt Katharinen

The origins of St. Catherine's Monastery date back to the early 13th century, with the presence of Franciscan friars in Rostock first documented in 1243. By this time, a convent already existed under the leadership of a guardian. Archaeological findings indicate construction measures from 1234, which included the conversion of a beach section into flood-proof building land. The monastery, which belonged to the Lübeck Custody of the Saxon Order Province, was built on a former Slavic castle site. A first monastery church, probably a late Romanesque hall church, was mentioned in 1259 but was destroyed by a city fire in 1262. Subsequently, a new, simpler monastery church was built, located in the southern part of the complex, flanked by the monastery cemetery to the west. The buildings of the Franciscans, also known as "Grey Friars," were connected by a cloister.

The monastery complex is situated in the historic Old Town of Rostock, nestled between a former side arm of the Warnow river, today's Grubenstraße, and the eastern city wall. Its location in the northern section of the Old Town, at an elevation of approximately 6 m above sea level, was strategically advantageous, providing good access to the harbor and the Old Town market. The monastery grounds are bordered to the south by the streets Beim Waisenhaus and Beim Katharinenstift, and extend to the west to the Grube and to the east to the Faule Straße.

Remains of the original monastery buildings are still preserved today and have been supplemented by modern extensions since 1998. These now house the Rostock University of Music and Theatre. The entire complex is listed as a historical monument in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
