Katharinenkirche, Nuremberg

The convent was founded in 1295 by Konrad von Neumarkt and his wife Adelheid from the Nuremberg patrician family of Pfinzing von Henfenfeld. The convent church was consecrated as early as 1297. The convent experienced a significant phase in the early 15th century when it was reformed in 1428 from Schönensteinbach Abbey, adopting a strict observance of the rule. This led to a flourishing of spiritual and intellectual life, establishing Katharinenkloster as a leading institution among the Dominican convents in the Teutonia province, from which numerous other convents were reformed. However, with the introduction of the Lutheran Reformation in Nuremberg after 1525, the convent's continued existence was jeopardized. Following the death of the last nun in 1596, the convent was dissolved. Between 1620 and 1778, the Nuremberg Meistersinger used the Katharinenkirche as a meeting place. From 1699, the buildings housed the Academy of Fine Arts, which taught here until 1806. After its destruction in World War II, the secured ruins of the convent church have been used for open-air concerts and other events since the 1970s.

The ruins of the former St. Katharina convent church are now used for various events, particularly open-air concerts, due to their special acoustics. Annually, the St. Katharina Open Air takes place here, featuring international and national musicians.
