Batthyány Castle
The Batthyány Castle is a palace building in Güssing in Burgenland. The Batthyány Castle is not to be confused with the Güssing Castle, which is also owned by the Batthyány family.
The castle is a building from the 1760s with a hook-shaped floor plan, two stories high and with arcades enclosed by glass windows.
King Louis II transferred Güssing Castle as a reward for the victory over a Turkish army at Jaice to the Hungarian noble Franz Batthyány and his nephew Christoph. The family had the castle expanded from the 16th century due to the looming threat from the East. In the course of the construction work, Count Ludwig Ernst Batthyány had the castle built at the eastern city gate of Güssing in 1761. When Burgenland was to be handed over to Austria at the end of August 1921 in accordance with the peace treaties of Trianon and Saint Germain, Hungarian irregulars occupied parts of what is now Burgenland and temporarily set up their command post in Batthyány Castle.
The castle is now used for residential purposes and remains in the possession of the Batthyány family.
