Kasteel Strijthagen

The Castle can be visited

Kasteel Strijthagen is a remarkable castle in the municipality of Landgraaf in Dutch Limburg. It is considered the last fully preserved noble estate in the region and is characterized by its picturesque location in the valley of the Strijthagerbeek and its distinctive architecture.

History+

A medieval castle previously stood on the site of the current castle. The present main building was constructed in the 18th century and is situated directly on several small ponds fed by the Strijthagerbeek. The castle's facade displays a typical Maasland architectural style with alternating layers of brick and natural stone from the Mergelland. The entire complex also includes the classical rentmaster's residence, a white-paved forecourt from the 17th century, a water mill, and a more recent coach house. In the 20th century, Kasteel Strijthagen suffered significant structural damage due to nearby coal mining. From 1952, the Dutch artist Aad de Haas resided in the increasingly dilapidated castle. After the end of mining and extensive landscape renovations, the castle was thoroughly restored as part of the “Mondo Verde” theme park and given a new purpose.

Location+

Kasteel Strijthagen is located in Landgraaf, in the Limburg district of Zuid-Nederland, Netherlands, at an elevation of approximately 114 m above sea level.
