Kasteel Schaesberg (Castle)

Around 1570, Johan von Schaesberg began the construction of the original moated castle in the Renaissance style. It is believed that a farm belonging to the Schaesberg family previously stood on this site. After Johan's death in 1591, his son Frederik continued the legacy. Thanks to Frederik's services to the Spanish Crown, Philip II of Spain granted the lordship of Schaesberg the status of a hereditary dominion in 1618. Under Frederik's son, Baron Johan Frederik von Schaesberg, the estate underwent a significant expansion around 1650: a new wing, an imposing corner tower, and an agricultural complex were added in the Maasland Renaissance style. The Imperial Counts of Schaesberg inhabited the castle until the 18th century, then left it but remained its owners. After World War II, the castle was confiscated by the Dutch state because its German owners had fled. A fire in 1965 destroyed the outer bailey and a large corner tower. Since 1975, the remaining ruins have been protected.

Kasteel Schaesberg is situated at approximately 98 meters above sea level in Landgraaf, in the province of Limburg, in the southern Netherlands.

Today, visitors can explore the ruins of Kasteel Schaesberg. Within the moat, the foundations of the outer bailey are still visible, along with two of the 17th-century corner towers of the main building and some remaining wall sections. The historic natural stone window frames are particularly striking.
