Kasteel Hillenraad

Kasteel Hillenraad, an impressive square-plan moated castle, is located in the south of Swalmen in the province of Limburg, Netherlands. Dating back to the 14th century, it is distinguished by its four corner towers and picturesque setting amidst an extensive estate.
History+
The first documented mention of the house Hellenrade dates to June 28, 1380. In the 15th century, the complex comprised only the central part of the building. A significant episode occurred in 1572 when William of Orange used the castle as his headquarters for the siege of Roermond. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the castle underwent extensive expansions, including the addition of the distinctive four corner towers. From approximately 1270 to 1695, Swalmen was an independent estate within the Duchy of Guelders, before being elevated to a margraviate with Asselt.
