Kasteel de Wildenborch (Castle)

To be privately owned

Kasteel de Wildenborch, a historic castle in the Dutch province of Gelderland, is nestled in the Oost-Nederland region. It is a remarkable example of the defensive architecture of past times, with a turbulent history behind it.

History+

The first documented mention of Kasteel de Wildenborch occurred in 1372, when it was owned by the robber knight Sweder Rodebaert von Wisch. Its strategically advantageous location amidst swamps made it an ideal retreat after raids. From here, the Lords of Wisch carried out attacks in the neighboring counties of Zutphen and Overijssel. In 1490, the citizens of Deventer and Zutphen responded with sieges of Wildenborch and Kasteel Wisch, but without decisive success. Duke Charles of Gelre besieged the complex three times in vain until Lord Johann von Wisch surrendered in 1512, and the castle became a ducal open house. Johann's grandson Joachim von Wisch continued the raids from 1519, whereupon the Duke stationed a permanent garrison in 1523 and had the fortifications razed. With Joachim's death in 1544, the Wisch lineage died out in the male line, and the inheritance passed to his sister Irmgard. In 1757, Count Wilhelm Otto Friedrich von Quadt transferred the Wildenborch estate to the architects Matthieu and François Soiron, who sold it about ten years later. In the 19th century, the castle was the residence of the Dutch poet A.C.W. Staring.
