Kasteel Bloemendal (Castle)

In 1791, the Aachen textile manufacturer Johann Arnold von Clermont, who was already residing at Kasteel Vaalsbroek, commissioned the Milanese architect Joseph Moretti to build a luxurious residence. The three-story building, in the early Neoclassical Louis XVI style, featured a double-flight grand staircase and was originally flanked by right-angled side wings, which were later replaced by rounded wings. Clermont moved into the unfinished building shortly before his death. His son Adam completed the construction but was forced to sell the property to Johann Wilhelm von Lommessem in 1846 due to economic difficulties. Lommessem then handed Kasteel Bloemendal over to the Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, who established a convent and boarding school for noble and wealthy daughters there in 1848. Rose Kennedy, John F. Kennedy's mother, was one of the most famous students. A fire in 1862 damaged parts of the convent, including the chapel. During World War II, the convent served as a military hospital from 1940 to 1944. After the war, the boarding school reopened, but dwindling student numbers led to its sale to the municipality of Vaals in 1978. A hotel chain acquired the property in 1990 and extensively restored it.

Kasteel Bloemendal is located in Vaals, a municipality in the province of Limburg in Zuid-Nederland, Netherlands. It stands at an elevation of approximately 194 m above sea level.

Today, Kasteel Bloemendal houses a hotel. A statue of a nun in front of the main entrance continues to commemorate its time as a convent.
