Kasteel Ammersoyen

The exact construction date of the castle is unknown, but as early as 1026, a ruler named Rothardus de Ambersoi is mentioned. The first documented mention of the castle itself dates to 1354, when Arent Ammersoyen inherited it. In 1386, the castle was captured by Willem van Geldern after a brief siege. Over the following centuries, Ammersoyen changed hands multiple times, including to Reinoud IV van Gelre (1405) and Johan von Broeckhuysen (1424). In 1513, the castle suffered damage from Habsburg troops and was largely destroyed by fire in 1590. Thomas Walraven van Arkel had the complex restored in 1648 and 1667, reinstating its original form. During the French invasion of 1672, the castle remained unharmed, while the village of Ammerzoden burned down. After the extinction of the van Arkel family in 1693, numerous changes of ownership followed, including the van Lichtervelde and De Woëlmont Ammersoyen families. In 1873, Arthur Baron de Woëlmont sold the castle to the Catholic parish, which used it as a monastery. In 1957, the "Geldersche Kastelen" foundation acquired the property and carried out extensive restoration work from 1959 to 1975.

Kasteel Ammersoyen is located in Ammerzoden, a town in the province of Gelderland in the Oost-Nederland region, Netherlands. It stands at an elevation of approximately 9 meters above sea level.

Today, Kasteel Ammersoyen is open to the public and can be visited. It houses a museum that illuminates the history of the castle and its inhabitants, and also features a restaurant.
