Mauerbach Charterhouse

The Carthusian Monastery of Mauerbach was founded in 1313. In the late Middle Ages, the monastery was repeatedly subjected to looting, including severe devastation during the Turkish siege of 1529. A phase of renewal began in the early 17th century, leading to intensive construction activities. In 1782, the monastery was dissolved as part of the Josephine Reforms. From 1784, the complex served as a welfare institution for the municipality of Vienna and later as a civilian hospital. After a period of decay, the Carthusian Monastery became property of the Republic of Austria in 1962 and has been renovated by the Federal Monuments Office since 1984.

The Carthusian Monastery of Mauerbach is situated in the market town of Mauerbach in Lower Austria, northwest of Vienna, at an elevation of approximately 298 meters above sea level.

Today, the Carthusian Monastery of Mauerbach belongs to the Republic of Austria and is used by the Federal Monuments Office as an information and training center. Parts of the complex and exhibitions held there can be visited on weekends during the summer months.
